A calm taste of the past
Having stayed at a number of Ryokan over the years the charm can sometimes wear off as the facilities and welcome are copy & paste from one place to the next.
But..
Motoyu Ishiya was something a bit more special. Much more traditional and from an older time this was something to be savoured. From the remote mountain setting to the formality of the staff, Motoyu Ishiya sets itself a level above the regular ryokan.
The walls speak of history (keep in mind this Ryokan dates to pre Meiji restoration and the times of the samurai)
The quiet calm of the place is reflected in everything you find there including the dark sulphurous waters to soak away your troubles.
With fresh snow on the ground the area was transformed and a very good night was had.
Well recommended for a touch of times gone by

This a traditional Japanese onsen hotel that was built in a historical building with 230 tears old. The ambience is super nice as you can immense yourself in the authentic traditional ryokan style with hospitality. The service is impeccable. The only drawback is the outdoor onsen is too small and not literally outdoor.

The property was built in the Edo period, this tranquil hot spring inn is located 11 km from Kenroku-en garden in Kanazawa. It's quite close to from Morimoto train station.
There is lots of free parking space, both breakfast and dinner are included but one must arrive by 6pm for dinner, which is served in a cozy restaurant. The gender-segregated communal bathhouse has both indoor and open-air pools with natural hot spring water, which is coffee brownish colour. There is a theatre stage which host an annual performance too. Amazing experience and well worth the visit. The hosts were so friendly.

This ryokan was a top experience of our two-week trip in Japan. Such a charming and unique oasis and glimpse of traditional Japanese life. The rooms and facilities are even better than pictured. An onsen is included in the price, and you can go as often as you'd like. We highly recommend their nine-course meal that you can reserve (for an extra fee) up to two days prior to your stay. They even accommodated our group member's gluten allergy. The ryokan is easily accessible by bus from Kanazawa station (the folks at the Tourist Information Center make it easy to find), and you're greeted by staff the minute you get off the bus, as the stop is right there. We cannot say enough about this experience. It was definitely worth its value and will forever be a highlight of our time. Thank you, everyone at Motoyu Ishiya, for making our stay a memorable one!

We had such an amazing time at this ryokan. A bit secluded just outside of Kanazawa it allowed us to just relax and enjoy the moment. The architecture and interior of the ryokan and its garden is outstanding! Every detail matters! It has a beautiful onsen, comfortable rooms and great food. We had the best time at dinner, everyone was heartwarmingly friendly and the food was served in such a nice way! I was especially grateful that they cooked an individual vegetarian meal for me! Highly recommended!

Hot-spring opening times: 06:00 – 09:00 and 11:00 – 23:00 For the schedule and tickets of once every few years Noh play, please contact the property directly. Contact details can be found in the booking confirmation. If you would like a guided tour of the Noh stage, please check in before 4.30pm and ask at the front desk. The tour starts at 5pm and lasts for 30 minutes. For guests traveling with children, please inform their number and ages to the property at the time of booking. Children’s rates apply. -To eat dinner at the property, a reservation must be made at least 2 days in advance. -You must check in by 19:00 to eat dinner at the property. Guests who check in after this time may not be served dinner, and no refund will be given. -Starting times for dinner are 18:00, 18:30 and 19:00. -Guests with a breakfast-included plan must check in by 21:00.
An additional accommodation tax is required in Kanazawa. Guests are required to pay JPY200 per guest per night if the room rate per night is between JPY5,000 and JPY19999, and JPY500 per guest per night if the room rate per night is equal to or above JPY20,000. This surcharge is not included in the total rate for some rooms and must be paid at the hotel.
